Cornell study questions superior vegan footprint

Anyone read this study?

http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=1091328

I'm considering buying the article. I read several news summaries that interpret the study as concluding that a vegan diet does not necessarily use land as efficiently as a diet with small amounts of meat (due to the higher value of land required to grow vegetables as compared with the land required to raise beef). I suspect the data is very local or more inconclusive than assumed, but the presumed implications are dangerous. One long-time vegetarian friend of mine read this summary:

http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Oct07/diets.ag.footprint.sl.html

.. And promptly returned to eating meat!

I'd really like to get my hands on the full study and pick it apart. In particular the specific kind of vegan that may have a higher relative footprint is a "high fat vegetarian diet", the definition of which is not apparent (and seems a little oxymoronical). Thoughts?

Forum: General Discussion Area

Run the LA Marathon for the Animals!

Hello!

I wanted to put up a post to let you all know that a few vegans in Nevada are trying to put together a veg*n team to run in the Los Angeles marathon on March 21, 2010. We are planning on making t-shirts, and getting the word out on a healthy, happy vegan lifestyle; showing that we can eat compassionately and still be athletes! I think this is a great message to get out to the world (blast the whole protein debate out of the water).

We are talking about trying to get a fundraising aspect in as well, donating the money to an animal sanctuary or charity. This would be a great way to meet some vegan runners, and participate in a great event. They also have a half marathon and a 5k run as well, if you would just like to participate, but not for the whole 26.2 miles! If you are interested AT ALL, contact me at matus.michelle@gmail.com.
Vegan Shoes In Florida at Bealls Clothing Store

I can't wait to share this with those who live in Florida. I'm always looking for shoes (size 5.5) that I can walk in that don't look like little boy's or old lady shoes. I also need them to look half way decent since I work in them and often have to look professional (whatever that means). Payless doesn't cut it for me and I can't wear heals.

For those who live in Florida who have a Bealls Clothing store nearby, check these out. Bear Traps who makes leather shoes has a line of shoes ONLY IN THE STORES in Bealls called "Wear Ever". I saw 2 styles today. They are like slip on clogs with a wedge heel but not real bulky looking. The style names on them were Gwenda and Nilla. If anyone reads this and wants the sku, send me an email. I just checked and they are NOT sold online. Today is 10/4/09 in case you read this in 4 months and they not there. They were also on sale for $24.99 but it was the "all man made material" that caught my eye.

Vegan Traveler in Jacksonville, FL

Forum: Podcast Listeners in Florida

Soy Free Protein Ideas

Do any of you have suggestions for high protein foods that are not soy-based? I am pregnant and trying to get about 65 grams of protein per day and it seems like most of that is coming from soy foods (milk, yogurt, tempeh, tofu, etc.). I used to eat a lot less soy, but have switched over to soy versions of things because they seem to have a higher protein content. I know the whole "too much soy is bad for you" topic is controversial, but I think too much of anything is bad for you so I am looking for different ideas. Thanks in advance!

Forum: General Discussion Area

Allergy-friendly menu, possible nut substitution

Hello, all. My mom's side of the family has a tradition of getting together in Chicago on Thanksgiving weekend. In this family I have three young cousins who have among them allergies for: dairy, eggs (no challenges for me here), wheat, soy, peanuts, and possibly oats.

At this point I'm unsure how much responsibility I will have in cooking. The Cold Comfort Farm menu (except for the tempeh dish) looks great. HOWEVER, I suspect that there is a tree nut issue as well, which would be a problem for the Purple Potatoes with Cashew Cream.

There's also kid-friendliness to consider. The eldest is 10 and the youngest is a baby. A simpler starchy dish like the sweet potato fries might fit the bill instead.

Any advice?
Forum: The Vegan Table

Vegan diet for cancer cat?

OK, I have no idea which forum to post in, but this is about cat health.

My (tuxedo) cat Ella was diagnosed with untreatable liver cancer this afternoon. We've been treating her kidney failure for almost a year. In addition to saline injections, she's on a special diet which seems to be higher in fat and lower in protein.

I'm under no illusions that our 15-year old girl has a lot of time, but my question is, liver cancer is exactly the cancer Dr. Campbell of The China Study found could be turned off in mice and rats with a 5% animal protein diet as opposed to 20% (p. 56).

I never considered a vegan diet for her because it didn't seem to be healthy for cats. But what have we got to lose at this point? The vet gave her 3-12 months and said it was a toss-up whether it would be the kidneys or the liver that take her.

I plan to work with our vet, especially since the kidney diet is somewhat complicated, but I doubt she has any info on what would be the best food for her. I even have time to cook for her if necessary. Does anyone have any suggestions or resources?

Tina

Forum: Vegan Health

Vaccines

I was surprised to learn recently that many vaccines are produced by using eggs. Now, even vegan people probably should get vaccinated against diseases, but does anyone know if there is an alternative to this process that is just as safe and effective.

I will personally choose for myself to continue receiving any necessary vaccinations, but I would prefer a vegan option, if possible.

Before I get a slew of hate mail or postings, I ask everyone to remember that on such vegan issues, we all make our own choices. I don't claim or expect to be a "perfect" or pure vegan. So, if anyone feels they are "more purely" vegan than I am, they are probably correct, and I concede this point gladly.

Forum: Questions/Comments for Compassionate Cooks
