We have started our cats on a vegan diet and was wondering is there anyone else out there doing this? We are using Vegecat. |

i haven't trasitioned my cat to a vegan diet because i've heard mixed reviews and i'm afraid of creating a health problem for her. i am conflicted though, and would really like her to be vegan so i give her vegetarian kibble and canned wet food so she eats half as much meat as she used to. it's a start and at least it's not quite as many animals as she used to eat.
there is also another string on the message board with some other ideas and perspectives about vegan cats: http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/compassionatecooks/vpost?id=2665845
colleen also did a podcast about feeding our companion animals that's really interesting and informative but i can't remember the name of it. i'll try and find out an post the title for you so you can listen.
good luck with your kitty's new diet! __________________ "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men." - Alice Walker |

Reply with quote | #3 | tbelle, I don't feed my cats strictly vegan for the same reasons msjared mentioned and that Colleen mentions in her podcasts. One ingredient in catfood that I understand cats need to survive is taurine. Not being a vet I don't know how well taurine can be simulated artificially or derived from plant products. You might check the nutritional analysis of Vegecat to see if taurine is listed and compare the amount or percentage to a non vegan catfood. I believe cats are true carnivores and in the wild would primarily eat other animals rather than plants. HTH __________________ Trudy

Reply with quote | #4 | hi tbelle,
i found the name of colleen's podcast and the date so you can listen to it on itunes.
it's called "what do vegetarians feed their dogs and cats?" from 3/20/07.
i'd love an update on how your cats are doing on the vegan diet.
