Reply with quote | #1 | I am trying to watch the movie "Earthlings" and I am having a really hard time getting through it. I find myself stopping every 2 seconds. It's a good documentary but gosh it's difficult to watch what humans are capable of doing.
Earthlings - A documentary

Reply with quote | #2 | I agree. I saw a few seconds of the euthanasia portion and had to fast forward through most of the rest of it. I doubt I'd ever be able to watch the whole thing. I hear that the film is nicknamed the "vegan maker". I think it's a good resource though. I have to say that anyone who watches it and still chooses to eat animal products, buy a dog from a breeder, go to a circus, etc... would lose a lot of respect in my book. |

Reply with quote | #3 | On my third try, I managed to watch/listen to the whole thing. I say "listen" because it really wasn't doing my heart any good to see such suffering, so I opened up another tab on my computer and listened to the movie while looking at another page.
I still sobbed through it though. I posted the trailer on my Facebook page with a warning about how graphic it is. Hopefully someone took the time to at least investigate the issue. __________________ Visit me on Twitter: VeganTweetin |

Reply with quote | #4 | I finally worked up the nerve yesterday to watch... the trailer. I have read several commentaries on the movie, so I was prepared for parts of it. But I will probably never see this movie.
I have seen several videos, like Meet Your Meat and other undercover investigations, and they serve an important purpose for me. They provide a wellspring of conviction that I am doing the right thing. I feel like less of an imposition at a food-related gathering or restaurant if I remember why I have made my choice. Wouldn't you feel less ridiculous pestering the waitress about whether there was beef broth in the soup, if you had an actual image in your mind of a cow suffering through slaughter? I feel less cowed if I am ridiculed. I feel more confidence when it is time to speak up for the animals, by voice or in print. These videos empower me in a way no photo or written word can.
But I only aim to watch one instance of the cruelty - one video on downers, one video on egg farms - and I do it over time. If I were to watch image after image of torture for an hour and a half, I think I would drown. For me, I think Earthlings would cross the line into masochism.
Anakiya, you know what you are capable of. You're not alone in finding difficulty with this movie. Maybe a partial step would be to read some commentaries on the movie - I found some of the descriptions and people's reactions to them...I guess I'd say upsetting, but tolerable. Matilda, did you feel you got something unique out of listening to it?

Reply with quote | #5 | I think listening to part of it achieved two things:
1) I was able to get through the whole thing. I started out watching and discovered I couldn't take the images after a while. All you need are a few to shock you right back to the core of your being, and if I had been forced to watch more instead of having the option to switch over to listening only, I would have stopped early in the movie.
2) Listening allowed me to really hear what was being said, and the information wasn't competing with the images of abuse flooding my eyes. Not that one can't both watch and listen, but we all agree that stuff like this can be emotionally overwhelming. How much information can you really take in when you're upset?
It's a tough movie. I agree it serves a purpose though. There are times when I get tired of having to make choices that others around me can't be bothered to make, and I admit to feeling frustrated. Yet a single image from Earthlings or Meet Your Meat is enough to straighten me out. __________________ Visit me on Twitter: VeganTweetin |

Reply with quote | #6 | Okay for one I am very glad I watched this movie... even though I bawled the WHOLE time. I typically am a very strong person it takes a whole lot to upset me, but this movie had me sooo upset that I was crying and like pacing around yelling at the television. at one point it talks about retaliation... i was still crying but i was jumping up and down yelling at the elephant to get everyone who was ever mean to him. When I watched this I was toying with the idea of being vegetarian... after earthlings i went vegan soooo I'm glad I watched it but it was upsetting not at all for the weak-hearted. I would say it would suffice to just know what it is about and to act on it, you don't necessarily need to see the awful videos to know they are wrong.
more power to people who want to make others see this stuff. EVERYONE should be aware of what the are eating. |
