This is mostly for those who live in Ohio but, if you have friends or family who live here you may be able to help as well.

Apparently, the passage of California's prop 2 (which outlawed certain forms of intensive confinement of farm animals) has scared Big Agriculture in Ohio. The Big Ag lobby has managed to get a proposed constitutional amendment placed on the November ballot which would create a "Livestock Care Standards Board" to oversee the treatment of farm animals. Of course, the way the amendment is worded, It looks like Big Ag or, people who are likely under their thumb, will be running most of the committee.

I can't see passage of the issue being anything but bad for farm animals. Cruelty will be protected by Ohio's constitution in the name of "food safety" and "protecting Ohio's farms and families"

If you are in Ohio and are not a registered voter, you have until 4 October to register to vote in this election. Every vote will be needed. The language on the ballot is very warm and fuzzy as are the ads that Big Ag are putting out in support of it...Unfortunately, I see a very good chance of this passing.

HSUS take on the issue...

Thanks for the post.  I'll vote no and I'll tell everyone to vote no.

In case it gets missed below....

The final push is on. If you have any spare time over the next few days, you can make a difference. Check out http://www.ohioact.org/ to see what you can do.

Not a lot of time or effort is required. This issue is not like many others because if it passes, it will pass due to ignorance of the true facts. Not because one group with strong beliefs happens to out-number the other group with strong beliefs. The AR people who know about this issue are against it and, The Tea Party crowd who are aware of it are against it. If two groups that different agree that a bill is bad, that says something about the bill.  The Yes on 2 people were hoping to stealth this one in so, anything you can do to shine the light on what this law really is about can be very effective.

A well placed sign, a few flyers printed off and posted in public places or, a couple hundred door hangers that can be put out in an hour or two ( I hit an apartment complex a couple days ago and did 150 hangers in 45 minutes... not much time investment at all)  can jolt the voters out their haze and make them think about this issue for a minute before just buying into The Farm Bureau's giant glass of kool-aid and voting yes.
